OUR FAMILY

The Westerling’s

HOW IT STARTED

If we’ve never met, hi there! My name is Vicki (with an I), and I enjoy the simple things in life: farming, cooking, DIYing. I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by farming, as a kid in 4H and FFA, and leading my kids 4H projects later on in life. My husband and I met in college in Southern California, where we studied agriculture science. We planted our roots in Southern California, and started growing our family, and soon after that started growing our farm project. Our small ranch became the hub for our kid’s playdates, I mean, who can resist animal playdates? Our home also housed other 4H members and their animals for many years. We quickly learned that so many kids, teenagers, and even adults, enjoyed getting a deeper understanding of farming and started to develop a new perspective on it.

I began inviting friends over to teach them about germinating seeds, setting up irrigation systems, greenhouses, wood shop, building animal shelters, and showing them the ins and outs of farming (even the smelly parts) and plenty more. Since then, I’ve been posting my family’s adventures on the farm (to the very best of my technological abilities), and found a passion for bringing light to all aspects of the farm life. Society sometimes paints harsh image on farmers. The truth is, farmers care so deeply about their animals and homestead. It requires back-breaking labor, freezing in the cold night to help birth babies, and making some hard decisions to ensure the best quality of life for those animals. Some days, it’s hard. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Those of you who do the same understand how fulfilling and humbling it is to be a part of the larger ecosystem.

HOW IT’S GOING

When our family moved to Missouri, our adventures got a lot more intense. More critters, more land, and more seasons are bound to bring more fun! I knew that this blog would be a great outlet for farming education, but also some laughs. These animals really do have a life of their own! I knew it was finally time to share our adventures, lessons learned, and much more.

While there are many more exciting things planned for this family operation, we couldn’t wait any longer to start this project and share our love and deep appreciation for the animals, critters, plants, and natural resources that make life beautiful. We hope to instill the same love and gratitude to the lifestyle that we find so enchanting. And hey, if that’s not for you, you can always come visit ours for a few hours!
